I have a blu-ray disc (the Criterion Manchurian Candidate) that after a few minutes time loading I get an "unknown disc" message. After cleaning the disc and restarting several times the disc played normally but only one time. I have not been able to get it play again. It loads and plays normally on my Sony X800M2. Do you have any idea what the issue could be with the Magnetar? I haven't had this problem with any other discs.
Regards,
Daniel Reich
I have been having similar issues with 4K discs. Even if they are brand new. Some UHD discs will load fine, other times I get an unknown disc message. Firmware is up to date, I did the load default thing, no luck. Regular DVDs and Blu-ray discs are fine, it's just certain 4k discs
Currently only 3 or 4 discs (various formats except DVD) in my collection give me this problem. I have had a little luck with reloading the disc until it plays or restarting the player. These discs play fine in my backup player. It's very random but since it started I don't have the confidence I used to have in my Magnetar. Sadly, I worry about every disc I put in even though it has affected only 3 or 4 out of over a 1,000 discs.
@Daniel Reich All I know is I never had this issue with my old/backup player, an LG 4K region free player. That player played anything with no issues. I just hope that a future firmware update will address this situation. In the meantime I'm waiting for a new player, a Reavon, to arrive in a few days.
Fingers crossed... otherwise it's going to be time to get the LG out of storage.
@Dwayne Richardson Never had this issue with any players ever, Oppos, Sonys etc. For the money we paid the operation of the Magnetar should be flawless. Don't get me wrong, the Magnetar is a great player and the closest thing to the virtually extinct top of the line Oppo. The audio and video playback is fantastic but we should not be having any problems like this. We can't be the only owners this is happening to.
@Daniel Reich Totally agree. This is definitely a fantastic product, but it is just this issue that has me frustrated. I did hear back from Magnetar and they are aware of the situation and say that this issue isn't uncommon across the board among different players from different manufacturers.
As previously stated, I hope a future firmware update will fix the issue. It's got to have something to do with how the discs are encoded.
I also hope that more people who have this player and are experiencing the same issue will speak up.
@Dwayne Richardson I don't think this problem is "uncommon across the board..." I can't recall this happening with any other players I have owned. I hope more Magnetar owners see this post.
@Daniel Reich I just wonder if the UDP 900 has the same issues
@Dwayne Richardson Prior to owning the Magnetar, I owned the Oppo BDP-93. The only reason I replaced it was to go 4K and Atmos. It ran perfectly with no issues for 11 years. I gave it to a friend who is still using it. I love the Magnetar but I've had more trouble with it in the few months I've owned it than with any other disc player.
Yep I have this issue aswell with random discs, 4k and blu ray. Sometimes I have to open and close the trey a couple times to get it to work.
also there's always circular "smudges" on the bottem of my discs after I take them out of the player. Its a circular shape around the disc which always will sometimes cause the disc to freeze mid movie if to much of it builds up.
i clean my discs before I put them in the player and then when I take the disc out I'm seeing "stuff" on the bottem of discs.
so now every time I use my magnetar I know I have to clean the bottle of the disc again after using it. Real pain In the ass for such an expensive player. Have had it since May 2024
So I just got another player in the mail yesterday, a Reavon. First thing I did was test the 4K discs the Magnetar wouldn't load.
They fired right up with no problems at all.
I really hope the techs at Magnetar addresses this issue. For a time I was considering getting the 900. Not anymore after these issues. However right now I plan on holding onto the UDP 800 because the discs that it does play look and sound great. I'm just going to set it aside until a new firmware update is released and just use the Reavon as my main player for the time being.
@Ashto I've cleaned the discs and that doesn't always work. I haven't noticed dirt on the disc after playing but I will pay closer attention to that now. Also this phenomenon only happens to very few discs.
@Dwayne Richardson Wow, good luck with the new player. My back up player, a Sony, doesn't have any issues with the troublesome discs. I hope Magnetar gives this issue some serious thought.
@Daniel Reich it not dirt, more looks like the factory off gassing we see in our new 4k cases sometimes.
I researched the off-gassing and found this video. I applied what I learned to my new Steven Wilson Home Invasion 4K UHD blu-ray that froze on the top menu right out of the sleeve. After that it played like a charm. I will test it on other discs. https://youtu.be/EPDvxc77M4k?si=jwoOVR7mhAe5Jobh
